Halloumi is clearly the cheese of the moment and it is growing in popularity all the time. Traditionally a sheep’s milk cheese from the Greek island of Cyprus, halloumi has come into fashion in a big way, and is now found in everything from pasta to potato dishes, and served grilled, fried, crumbed or with a dipping sauce!

Now, this popular cheese is making waves in London and a new pop up Halloumi restaurant has enjoyed great success in the last few weeks. Say Hallou-mi to Cyprus! was originally meant to open for one week only, but after selling out in record time, they have extended their run, ensuring that more cheese lovers get to taste their wares. A pop up success

Halloumi is an incredibly versatile cheese and it’s also a favourite of vegetarians, as it does not contain rennet. It’s a cheese that draws in the crowds, as Andrew Zilouf, the director of 100 Hoxton, the restaurant where the pop up is based, has discovered.

The collaboration between the restaurant and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation came about after the organisation wanted to introduce the local cheese to those who had never tried it. It seemed that a huge number of people were keen to try it, and there were also a number of existing halloumi fans in London who were more than happy to sample a tasting menu, and discover new ways to enjoy the cheese too. Following the instant success of the pop up cheese restaurant, Zilouf said that their partnership with the Cyprus Tourist Organisation had been incredible and that they had hoped that the pop up would be popular, but had never dreamed just how popular.

A profitable pop up

Hoxton 100 chef, Francis Puyat, created a 5 dish tasting menu to serve at Say Hallou-mi to Cyprus! and no doubt used a chilled counter, such as those available at www.fridgefreezerdirect.co.uk, to ensure that the cheese was kept at optimal temperature at all times.

On the menu at Say Hallou-mi to Cyprus!, there is something to suit all tastes. Halloumi and cauliflower fritters with lime pickle yogurt, fresh grilled courgettes and a halloumi salad, chargrilled halloumi flatbread and crumbed halloumi fingers were just some of what was available. There was also halloumi ice cream, which has been described as a decadent and creamy treat.
